In hot stone massage therapy, heated, smooth, flat stones are placed on key parts of the body. Sometimes the therapist will actually use the stones in the massage, and other times they are primarily there for the warmth (which promotes greater circulation). This modality has become increasingly popular in the past decade. Due to certain dangers with increased heat directly on the skin, it is not recommended for everyone, but is enjoyed by many -- especially during the winter months.

Hypnotherapists use deep relaxation exercises relaxation that bring about and a slightly altered state of consciousness, also known as trance. A person in such a deeply focused state is unusually responsive to an idea or image, but still maintains free will.
